If you’re female and you’ve talked to me about cosmetics in the past year, you’ll have heard me sing praises to Birchbox. As a commitment phobe to beauty products (what if there’s something better?!) I really, really like sample sized products. Plus they’re great to pack for traveling. And I get to try new things every month. And they’re packaged all nice so it feels like I’m getting a monthly surprise gift.
Previously, I also tried MyGlam, but felt the products were too low-end and/or small compared to Birchbox.
However, new competitor Glossybox has recently made its way to the US and has left me very impressed.
Here’s a comparison of the two most recent boxes I received from both companies:
Birchbox August 2012 ($10)
Schick Hydro Silk Razor – full size ($9.99 value)
Comodynes Self-Tanning Intensive – 2 full-size towelettes, $14.99 for box of 8 ($3.75 value)
Comodynes Hydra-Tanning Face Moisturizing Summer Glow – 2x .10 OZ. free samples
Beauty Fixation Make Up Remover – 3 sticks, $5 for a box of 24 ($.63 value)
Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur – free sample
DDF Brightening Cleanser – 2 OZ. deluxe sample ($9 value)
Total Value: $23.37
Glossybox July 2012 ($21)
Figs & Rouge Lip, Face & Body Balm – full size ($6)
Sebastian Professional Color Ignite Multi Tone Shampoo – deluxe sample ($3 value)
Sebastian Professional Color Ignite Multi Tone Conditioner – deluxe sample ($4.24 value)
Alessandro International Pedix Heel Rescue Balm – deluxe sample ($5.55 value)
Senna Cosmetics Mineral Eyeshadow Trio – full size ($24)
Ruddy Water Blushed Pouch – 1 packet, $22 for pack of 24 ($.91)
Total Value: $43.70
Both boxes do a great job at essentially doubling your spend. I have a slight preference towards Glossybox at the moment due to the bigger sample sizes/full size products, but it is also about double the price of Birchbox. Depending on your budget, you really can’t go wrong with either one, but if I had to narrow it down to just one, it’d probably be Glossybox due to the aforementioned reasons.
